Art Deco Collection

For a Dutch interior brand I designed and developed the concept and artworks for an extensive carpet collection. I created a story based on the brands vision of reviewing heritage craftmanship, and infused this with the legacy of the Art Deco movement from the 1920s/30s and the language of design, art and architecture of that era. The characteristics of Art Deco reflect admiration for the modernity, design and luxury of the machine and machine-made objects by using geometric, clean and simple shapes.

I aimed to reinterpret this feeling of classic modernity and brought it to life in this collection of rugs, taking geometric language to a next level by adding and combining versatile fabric structures. Hereby I re-used sample pieces from the fabric library that was developed by Renee Merckx, and adjusted, mixed and matched these with other material textures to create something fresh and contemporary.

The beauty and feeling of tactile material and the heritage craftsmanship of carpet/fabric creation is honored and reflected in the artworks and made modern and achievable by using the present day technique of digital printing for carpets.
